Roundtable discussion on
Political Reforms in Bangladesh

A Roundtable discussion on Political Reforms in Bangladesh was held at the conference room of The Daily Star. It was jointly organized by The Daily Star and `SHUJAN’ - Citizens for transparent and accountable government. The discussants focused on significant reforms in electoral system of Bangladesh.

The program was moderated by renowned economist Prof. Muzaffer Ahmed. The discussants included Dr. Kamal Hossain, Mr. A M A Muhit, Mr. Abdul Matin Khasru, Mr. Hafiz Uddin Khan, Mr. M. Mujibul Haque, Dr.Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan, Mr. Mahfuz Anam, Mr. Ataus Samad, Mr. Feroz M Hasan, , Dr. Tofael Ahmed, Ms. Munira Khan, Ms. Sharmeen Murshid, Mr. Faruk Khan, M.P, Mr. G.M. Quader. Mr. Hasanul Haq Inu, Mr. Rafiqul Islam Sarkar.

They highlighted among other things, the issue of criminalization of politics, influence of money and muscle during & before election. They called for forging a grand alliance of all stakeholders specially the people at the grassroots, the members of civil society, NGOs, Academics with a view to creating a favorable environment where good, honest & responsible people can come forward to create a healthy society.

 

Earlier a paper on `Ways to Political reforms: the relevance of Indian experience’ by Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Member secretary of SHUJAN was circulated among the discussants and it was used as the background paper. He dealt with the issues and struggles waged by the conscientious citizens and eminent people of India to clean up criminalization of Indian politics for greater good of the people and and the lessons we can learn from Indian experience.
